Workstreams

Segment your backlog into defined, automated workstreams that are easier to manage, organize and prioritize.

Overview

A backlog can quickly grow to become unwieldy. When hundreds of issues pile up, it can become difficult to keep a backlog clean, up-to-date and prioritized. Workstreams enable you to segment your backlog into defined streams that can be managed and prioritized independently.

For example, you could have defined workstreams for new features, bugs and improvements, or you can have a workstream for short-term priorities and another for future-looking items.

Creating a workstream

To create a workstream, navigate to the Workstreams section and click Create new workstream. You'll be prompted to:

  • Name your workstream

  • Assign an identifying color

  • Select a workstream type: Automated or manual

An automated workstream will be automatically updated when a new issue that matches the ruleset of the workstream enters the backlog (the issue will be added to the workstream).

A manual workstream needs to be manually updated.

  • Configure workstream rules (issues that match your rules will be able to be eligible to be added to your workstream). Workstream conditions can be based on:

Issue properties

Issue type, Issue status, Priority, Severity, Labels

Adding issues to a workstream

Automated workstreams

When a workstream is set to be automated, all issues that meet the conditions of your backlog and match the rules of the workstream will be automatically added to the workstream.

You can still manually add issues to an automated workstream by clicking Add issue when viewing the workstream.

Only issues that match the ruleset of the workstream can be added, unless "Allow issues that don't meet the above criteria to be manually added to this workstream" is checked off.

Manual workstreams

When a workstream is set to be manual, issues will need to be manually added. You can still create a ruleset for manual workstreams, and only issues that match that ruleset will be able to be added.

Workstream permissions

Only issues that meet the can be added to a workstream.

You can which user roles have the ability to create, edit and prioritize workstreams by going to Settings > Workspace > Workstreams.
